Vin de Set will celebrate the would-be 100th birthday of culinary pioneer Julia Child with a special three-course dinner offered from Tue., Aug. 14, to Sun., Aug. 19. Chef Ivy Magruder selected the menu items from among his favorite of Child’s recipes.
“I think Julia’s cuisine and the way she made it approachable has allowed restaurants like Vin de Set to open to the mass public,” Magruder says. “Anyone can come into a French restaurant and feel comfortable because of Julia.”
Fans of Julia Child and her cooking can enjoy the special dinner for $29.99. Vin de Set’s regular menu will also be available.
The courses - complete with Child’s descriptions - include:
• Billi-Bi, a soup of mussel stock, white wine and cream. (“Billi-Bi is one of those soups that seduces you the first spoonful you take.”)
• Cold Braised Veal Salad, with tuna sauce. (“Cold veal is a mild meat and tuna gives it the flavor lift it needs.”)
• Julia’s Rib-Eye Steak Diane, with Provencal tomatoes. (“In my Steak Diane sauce, I mix the base with some Dijon mustard, which provides a natural thickening.”)
If you still want to celebrate Child’s contributions to the culinary world, PBS will be honoring her legacy through a 10-day multi-platform initiative spanning on-air, online and social media engagement from Sun., Aug. 5, to Wed., Aug., 15, the actual date of her birthday.
According to a news release, the public television celebration begins in the kitchen. “PBS viewers and Julia Child fans are encouraged to cook their own versions of a classic Julia dish and share the experience through pictures and blogs on PBS Food and by using the Twitter hashtag #CookforJulia. Julia Child content can also be shared through various other social media channels, such as PBS’ Facebook page, PBS Food’s Facebook page, YouTube and Pinterest.
PBS invites fans to visit PBS Food as the home for all Julia Child content and to view nearly 100 exclusive limited-time full episodes from: IN JULIA’S KITCHEN WITH MASTER CHEFS, COOKING WITH MASTER CHEFS, THE FRENCH CHEF CLASSICS, BAKING WITH JULIA and three COOKING IN CONCERT specials, as well as recipes and other fun Julia-related content, including articles, links, quotes and a Julia personality quiz.”
