Before we get to the food, which is excellent by the way, the view framing Forest Park might make Bixby’s at the Missouri History Museum one of the best places for a client lunch in the city.
While the tables along the windows come at a premium (make sure to call in advance for reservations) the seats toward the center of the room give you a chance to take in more of the spectacular site of our fair city’s most beloved spaces at one time.
The menu is a treasure trove of refreshing takes on old favorites, starting with an unlikely star: deviled eggs with centers of creamy yellow yolk and smoky paprika. Traditional seafood bisque gets a reboot as well, with a foundation of shrimp and cream, poured table-side, supporting a single pillow of puff pastry, a buttery, cream fraiche-filled crouton that is gone all too quickly.
The Mound City Reuben pays homage to St. Louis in name, yet the sandwich, packed with thin-sliced pastrami and a cider-infused slaw on toasted marble rye, would be at home in any East Coast deli. The dish comes with a side of wild rice and apples, but it is the housemade bread and butter pickles that steal the show with a flavor that brings us back to childhood memories of raiding our grandparents stash in the cellar. Don’t be afraid to ask for seconds.
