The summer drought has plagued crops across the nation, yet the effects haven't all been negative. Many tree and vine fruits have actually benefited from the lack of water; the fruits may be smaller, but their flavors will be more intense due to the lower moisture content. Tomatoes are packing more punch, strawberries are sweeter, and fall apples are expected to more delicious than usual.

One local beneficiary of the abnormally dry conditions is Mount Pleasant Estates in Augusta, Mo. Thanks to the drought, some of their varietals are ripe and ready for an early harvest. We recently joined company president Chuck Dressel in the fields at the crack of dawn to witness the mid-August picking process and discuss the positive effect that the drought has had on Mount Pleasant’s crop.
